Since 1952 Johnson Tiles has produced top quality glazed ceramic tiles in South Africa. Whilst our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility produces floor tiles to exacting international and local quality standards, selecting the most suitable ceramic tile for your installation is still important to ensure that your tiles provide you with a lifetime of beauty and satisfaction.
There are so many ceramic tiles for sale in South Africa that the process of selection can be slightly overwhelming. To make the tile selection process easier, ask yourself these general questions before making your purchase:
• Will the tile be used as a floor tile or a wall tile?
o For indoor wall tiles there are virtually no restrictions when selecting ceramic tiles.
o For floor tiles the major consideration is how much traffic the area will receive, which will tell you what abrasion-resistance (or PEI) rating the tile should be.
• Will the tile be used as an outdoor or an indoor tile?
o As outdoor tiles, they should be frost resistant and have some degree of slip resistance.
o For indoor tiles, the amount of traffic the area will receive is important to determine the degree of abrasion-resistance the tile should possess.
• Is the area being tiled a wet area?
o When selecting bathroom tiles, kitchen tiles or outdoor tiles one must pay attention to the water absorption and slip resistance of the tile.
Once you have answered these questions, you can now select the correct tile type.
Glazed ceramic tiles are the perfect design tool as they are available in a variety of sizes, colours, patterns and textures. These ceramic tiles are made from clay and are glazed and fired at high temperatures making them tough, waterproof and impervious to most household liquids. This means they provide benefits over other floor and wall coverings such as wallpaper, laminate flooring, carpets and travertine and natural stone tiles.
If selected and installed correctly glazed ceramic tiles:
• Are more durable
• Have a high degree of moisture resistance
• Resist wear and tear
• Are not damaged by chemicals
• Are stain resistant
• Do not need to be sealed
• Are easy to clean and maintain and do not require polish
